Ramapo- All are welcome to attend these free and open to the public special events. Learn more about the issues, the many aspects of criminal justice, and the variety of career paths in this public service field.

For any questions about these events or about enrolling in criminal justice degree programs at RCC, please contact Kevin Barrett, PhD, Chair of Criminal Justice at Rockland Community College. Barrett previously served in the Englewood (NJ) Police Department for 32 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant.

Rockland Community College offers degrees in Criminal Justice, Corporate and Homeland Security, Fire Science, Fire Protection, and Emergency Management as well as a Paralegal Degree and Certificate.

Jeffrey Deskovic – Wrongful Conviction
Tuesday – October 25

In 1990, at the age of 17, Jeffrey Deskovic was wrongfully convicted in the terrible rape and murder of a high school classmate in Peekskill NY. After serving 16 years of wrongful imprisonment, Deskovic was entirely exonerated through DNA evidence. Since his release in 2006, he has become an inspiring public speaker and a strong advocate for criminal justice reform. Receiving a settlement in 2014 for his wrongful incarceration, Deskovic created the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice to fight wrongful convictions. After earning his master’s degree in criminal justice from John Jay, he is currently attending law school at Pace University.

The Undercover Policing Legend – Chucky Byam

During his 23 year career in New York City (mostly the Bronx), Detective First Grade Chucky Byam’s expertise and legendary undercover work led to the removal of more than 2,500 illegal firearms from the streets of NY and many arrests. Working in the Firearms Investigation Unit, Byam executed more than 500 buy operations with Byam posing variously as a narcotics or firearms dealer, a gang member, or even a contract killer.

Inspiring speaker Sean Pica, shares his own personal testament to the value of education and transformation in prison. Pica, the Director of Hudson Link, will lead the discussion after a screening of First Degree. The documentary follows the story of the power of education for several Sing Sing inmates. Hudson Link provides college education, life skills and re-entry support to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women to help them make a positive impact on their own lives, their families and communities, resulting in lower rates of recidivism, incarceration and poverty.
