Recent RCC Graduates Include Eighteen US Veterans

Ramapo, NY—The number of recent graduates who earned a degree or certificate at Rockland Community College and were eligible to participate in the recent Commencement (May 18) was 1,443. Eighteen of these recent graduates are United States military veterans, and 15 of this group achieved additional distinction by earning the academic qualifications for membership in SALUTE, the national honor society for student veterans.

Rockland Community College has several special programs for returning veterans and has been designated a Military Friendly Campus each year since 2012. For more information about Veterans’ Services at RCC contact Jonathan Barnwell: jbarnwel@sunyrockland.edu or see our website http://www.sunyrockland.edu/campus-life/services/veterans

Norm Cottrill, Jr., one of RCC’s graduating student veterans, was one of only three RCC graduates awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence this year. Cottrill served with the US Navy in the Persian Gulf War and later as a parachutist with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. In addition to the Chancellor’s Award, he earned membership in SALUTE and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Sigma Omicron national honor societies. The Chancellor’s Award is given to a small group of students from across all the State University of New York campuses, recognizing exceptional students who integrate academic excellence with leadership, campus involvement, community service, the creative or performing arts, athletics, and/or career achievement.
