RAMAPO, N.Y. – More than 300 toys were collected for distribution to local children during Rockland Community College's annual holiday toy drive. The toys were donated by RCC faculty, students and staff, and were in response to requests made by Rockland County's Department of Social Services, day care centers in Haverstraw, Spring Valley and Nyack, and other agencies.

Coordinated by RCC Student Involvement, the drive allows a donor to “adopt” a recipient from among “snow baby” pictures posted on the windows at the Student Involvement office in the College's Student Union. Many donors adopt more than one child for their donation, and some children receive more than one gift so that a sibling can also receive a toy. Among the most popular items donated are Barbie dolls, board games, teddy bears, footballs and basketballs, toy trucks, marbles, dominoes, and school supplies such as backpacks.

The drive – a staple on the RCC campus for some 20 years – ran from the last week in October until December 14. “It's like we have a toy store in our office from the end of October to December,” said Tammy Collins Richardson, Director of RCC Student Involvement. “Each year different organizations contact us, and we do our best to fulfill as many requests as possible. I wish we could collect more toys so we could help a lot more agencies.” She cited faith-based centers and homeless and battered women shelters as other suitable toy-drive beneficiaries.

A sizable number of day-care recipients are children of RCC students. “This drive helps us give back to the community,” Richardson said. “RCC is not just a campus. It is a countywide fixture that reaches out to assist others in need. Our 'snow baby' toy drive enables us to help our students outside the classroom and to show our heart to the community as a whole.”

The annual toy drive is one of many ways the RCC community gives back throughout the year. Visit the news page for other stories involving community service.
