RCC Offers New Maritime Studies Program

DATE: July 6, 2017

Coast Guard-approved courses for those seeking Merchant Marine careers

RAMAPO – You can now launch a Merchant Marine career through Rockland Community College. Working with a US Coast Guard-approved partner, RCC is offering a new program featuring a blend of online training with hands-on classroom instruction at the College’s campuses.

The U.S. Maritime Administration says the nation faces a critical need for new merchant mariners over the next five years. Maritime careers include ship officers, engineers, technicians, food service workers and maintenance crew.

Maritime Studies is a partnership between RCC Continuing Education and Learn America, an approved training provider. Most of the coursework is completed online, with one to five days of in-person training.

Mariners seeking work on board any ship are required to complete a Coast Guard-approved Basic Training course. Through the RCC/Learn America program, the majority of this course is conducted online, with three consecutive days of training at campus sites to complete the certification. Students will also be able to sign up for any of the individual elements of the Basic Training course.

The RCC/Learn America program also includes an Advanced Firefighting course, and a comprehensive course for those who wish to become a Designated Duty Engineer. These courses are also a combination of online study and classroom training and can help those already working in the field to progress up the professional ladder.

To learn more about the course offerings or to find out how to register, visit, or call Continuing Education at 845-574-4151.

Most in-person classes for the Maritime Program will take place at RCC’s Suffern and Haverstraw campuses. Firefighting classes will be held at the Rockland Fire Training Center in Pomona.
