FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE: September 6, 2018

RAMAPO, N.Y. – Rockland Community College Veterans Affairs has been awarded a $24,250 state grant for renewal of a veterans financial literacy course and for enhancements to RCC's veterans lounge. The grant was provided by the State University of New York (SUNY) Impact Foundation and the U.S. Ambassador Trustee Carl Spielvogel Fund for Veterans. Spielvogel is a SUNY Trustee and former U.S. Ambassador to the Slovak Republic.

The veterans financial literacy course, Green to Gold, is a series of free workshops open to all, and especially suited to young veterans transitioning to a career after their military service. The course was launched by RCC in 2013 with a grant from First Niagara Savings Bank, and continued in 2016 via grant funding obtained through the office of New York State Senator David Carlucci, an RCC graduate. The workshops provide coaching and mentoring in personal finance, goal-setting, and career development.

The Battle Buddy Center/Veterans Lounge opened in 2013, on the third floor of the RCC Fieldhouse. A $10,000 grant in 2016 from the New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) enabled the College to move the lounge to a larger, brighter space in the former greenhouse in the Academic I building. The lounge's grant funding will be used to purchase a computer and printer as well as a more secure lock, and funds to provide necessary supplies for upcoming semesters. The lounge's amenities include a plush sofa, lounge chair, flat-screen TV, coffee station, and wall decorations with inspirational slogans and quotes.

“We’re delighted to receive this generous grant, as it allows us to continue to serve our growing student veteran population,”said Jonathan Barnwell, RCC's Coordinator of Judicial & Veterans Affairs.

RCC is a military-friendly institution, having again received this designation from publisher Victory Media. In addition, RCC captured a Gold Award for 2018 from Victory Media for the College's programs for veterans returning to school.
