Honoring Dr. Sonya Shapiro

Distinguished educator and community activist Dr. Sonya Shapiro, who passed away on May 19, dedicated her life’s work to advocacy for the educational and human rights of all people. She worked tirelessly to help empower people through education, and left a legacy of community service, scholarship, and commitment. She served in recent years on the RCC Board of Trustees and as the BOT liaison to the RCC Foundation. A memorial plaque and garden bench to honor her memory have been installed in an area adjoining the RCC 9/11 Memorial Garden.

New Student Scholarship Awards Ceremony

The RCC Foundation provides many student scholarship awards. More than $350,000 is awarded annually (more than $3 million in total since they began) to help new and continuing RCC students. There is a broad range of criteria for awards including academics, athletics, or service to the community. A scholarship committee reviews all the applications and selects the awardees. There are special awards for veterans, alumni family members, adult learners, single parents, or those pursuing specific study or career paths. Endowed scholarships can offer educational opportunities to promising students while honoring the memory of a loved one. Dr. Shapiro arranged a legacy gift to provide a scholarship for a returning adult student each year, and Dr. Cliff L. Wood, President of RCC states that, “Dr. Shapiro’s charitable gift will have a profound impact on the lives of RCC students for many years to come.”

Print copies of the Scholarships for New Students booklet are available at local high school guidance offices and at RCC Admissions, Financial Aid, at the RCC Foundation office or see the scholarships booklets online at
