NYS Excelsior Scholarship Application Deadline is July 23

Program grants free tuition to eligible SUNY and CUNY students

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE: July 17, 2018

RAMAPO, N.Y. – The deadline to apply for the New York State Excelsior Scholarship program is July 23. The scholarship, in combination with other student financial aid programs, enables students to attend a State University of New York (SUNY) or City University of New York (CUNY) college tuition-free. Current and prospective students of Rockland Community College, a SUNY institution, are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Equally important, the student must apply for admission to RCC, complete the 2018/19 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid; www.fafsa.ed.gov) and 2018/19 New York State TAP (Tuition Assistance Program; www.hesc.ny.gov) applications prior to the completion of the Excelsior Scholarship application.

“Students must act now to take advantage of the Excelsior Scholarship program’s provision of free tuition, if they have not already done so,” said Madelene Aponte, Assistant Director of Financial Aid at RCC. “Cost is always a significant concern for students pursuing higher education, and RCC is pleased to offer this New York State-administered scholarship to lessen the financial burden for our students.”

The following eligibility requirements apply for the Excelsior Scholarship:

  • The family’s 2016 federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) must be less than $110,000
  • The student must meet general NYS grant eligibility criteria: A resident of New York State for at least one year; a citizen or eligible non-citizen (permanent residents, certain refugees and asylees); high school graduate, GED or high school equivalency recipient, or gain acceptance into RCC’s Early Admit or 24-credit program; attend full-time (12 credits or more per semester); earn at least 30 credits each year and make progress to graduate on time (in two years)
  • The student must agree to live/work in New York State after leaving college for the number of years equal to the awards received
  • Failure to meet the live/work requirement results in the scholarship’s conversion to an interest-free loan

For continuing RCC students, the following eligibility criteria apply:

  • Must have started in Spring 2017 or later
  • Must have attended full-time in consecutive semesters (no breaks in attendance)
  • Must have earned at least 30 credits per year and be progressing toward a degree within two years from the start
  • Must be working on a first degree; students with prior AA or BA/BS degrees are not eligible

Students can apply online for the Excelsior Scholarship at www.hesc.ny.gov/excelsior.

The Excelsior Scholarship program, which became effective in 2017/18, is administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC).
