Coast Guard-approved courses for those seeking Merchant Marine careers

RAMAPO – Give yourself the gift of an exciting new career this holiday season. Rockland Community College is offering classes through its innovative new Maritime Studies program that can prepare you for a job aboard ship.

RCC is offering the nation’s first blended online/in-person maritime program in partnership with Learn America, an approved training provider. Most of the coursework is completed online, with one to five days of on-site training in Rockland County.

The next set of in-person classes will take place the week of January 15, 2018, on RCC’s main campus in Suffern and at the Rockland Fire Training Center in Pomona. Students should register at least three weeks in advance and complete the online portion of the course first.

Among the offerings in this set of classes is a Coast Guard-approved Basic Training course. Mariners seeking work as part of the crew of any ship must first complete this four-part training regimen. Students can also sign up for the individual elements of the Basic Training course, or for a Combined Basic & Advanced Firefighting class.

The U.S. Maritime Administration says the nation faces a critical need for new merchant mariners over the next five years. Maritime careers include ship officers, engineers, technicians, food service workers and maintenance crew.
