(ROCKLAND) – In collaboration with the Rockland Community College Hospitality & Culinary Center and Flik International, the highly anticipated Hudson Market on Main in Nyack will hold its grand opening on November 14th from 11:45 am to 2:00 pm at 5 North Main Street. The public can enjoy a tasting of various food from 1:00pm – 2:00pm.

The RCC Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center was created in response to the burgeoning growth in restaurants and tourism in the Mid-Hudson Valley and the resulting need for more qualified workers. The curriculum focuses on New York artisanal food, craft beverages and agriculture. It offers fast-track culinary arts certificate programs, workforce-ready training for veterans and under-served populations, a state-of-the-industry teaching kitchen and now, an open-to-the-public market store with freshly prepared foods for dine-in or take-out.

The Market opened to the public on October 22 and features a 45-seat café managed by Flik Hospitality with an assortment of baked goods, soups, salads and sandwiches. “The goal is for students to ultimately run and manage the café,” says Cris Spezial, Chair of Hospitality and Culinary Arts for Rockland Community College. “That means some of the food students make during their classes will be a part of the cafe's offerings.”

In addition to breakfast and lunch items, Hudson Market on Main also features retail items from vendors sourced from the Hudson Valley, a key component of the college's curriculum. There are cheeses from 5 Spoke Creamery in Goshen and Nettle Meadow in Warrensburg; sauces, salsas and produce from Hudson Valley Harvest in Kingston; maple syrup from the Catskills Mountain Sugar House in Grahamsville; coffee beans from Java Love in Suffern; scrumptious vegan desserts from Greyston Bakery in Yonkers and much, much more. A pop-up restaurant, also run by students, is planned for spring 2020.

“The culinary center is also a wonderful community resource,” noted Mark Davidoff Interim Coordinator of Nyack Extension Site. “With the professional teaching kitchen, we are now able to offer cooking classes for all ages and recipe demonstrations showcasing Hudson Valley foods, beverages and local ingredients.” Upcoming classes include Vegetarian Autumn in the Hudson Valley on November 7, Italian Bistro on November 12 and Holiday Appetizers and Sides on December 5.
