Eligible High School Students Can Earn Tuition-Free College Credit through New Program at Rockland Community College

RAMAPO – The US Department of Education chose Rockland Community College as one of 44 colleges to participate in the Pell Grant Dual Enrollment Experiment, a program that will provide low-income high school students in the region with opportunities to earn tuition-free college credit while still in high school.

RCC will partner with school districts throughout Rockland to implement the Pell Dual Enrollment Experiment. The college will work with guidance counselors and school administrators to create the best path towards completing liberal arts classes as a strong start to college.

Many high school students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, lack access to the rigorous coursework and support services that help prepare them for success in college.

“We are pleased that we can now offer educational opportunities to high school students in our area who are ready to take college-level courses but may face a financial barrier,” said RCC President Dr. Cliff L. Wood.

Through RCC’s Early Admit program, 791 students have earned 40,017 college credits in the last ten years. Early Admit students have a median GPA (grade point average) of 3.3, which is .3 points higher than the general population, pointing to the success of the program.
