RAMAPO: All are welcome to attend Rockland Community College’s 2017 special events to honor and celebrate African American History.

Comic series: Black Panther: World of Wakanda
The nation of Wakanda is one of several African nations in this parallel world published by Marvel Comics.

Film: The 13th
Ava DuVernay’s documentary provides an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation’s history of racial inequality. Written by Spencer Averick and Ava DuVernay. Film appearances include Melina Abdullah, Michelle Alexander and Cory Booker. Sponsored by the Black Student Union

Multi-media production starring members of the world-renowned Opera Noire.
With support from the African American Historical Society, the Town of Ramapo, the Arts Council of Rockland and SKD (Saretsky Katz & Dranoff).


Hillburn Exhibit – March
Technology Center, Rotunda 2nd floor
An exhibit of artifacts centered on the 1943 legal case brought by the NAACP on behalf of African-American parents and their children against the unequal, unfair and discrimination of these children’s assignment to attend Hillburn NY’s segregated elementary Brook School, a wood structure that lacked even indoor bathrooms. Thurgood Marshall, who later went on to become a legendary supreme court justice won this local case 11 years prior to his landmark win in Brown v. Board of Education.
