12 RCC Students Inducted into National Biological Honor Society

RAMAPO – Twelve Rockland Community College students are among the newest members of Beta Beta Beta, the national biological honor society. The students were officially inducted into the Upsilon Iota chapter of the society May 5 at a ceremony on the RCC campus.

The new members are: Jorge Acuña, Spring Valley; Kurtis Brown, Spring Valley; Marjorie Calle-Rodriguez, Spring Valley; Neissa Charles, Spring Valley; Jonathan DiVietro, Sloatsburg; Jasmine Du, Valley Cottage; Liji Joseph, Congers; Elizabeth Kalappura, Blauvelt; Keverene Mason, New City; Peyton Reiss, New City; Melissa Reveil, Chestnut Ridge; and Evane Zhu, Nanuet.

Dr. Thomas Butler and Dr. Jeff McLean are the chapter’s faculty advisors.

Membership in Beta Beta Beta reflects achievement in the field of biology. Students must complete at least three biology courses and demonstrate a strong interest in biological research through participation in research projects. At meetings, club members read and discuss scholarly journals in various biological topics, and complete research experiments.

Eight of these same RCC students recently took part in the Beta Beta Beta Northeast District 1 Convention, held April 22 at Manhattan College. The students presented their research project "Molding Oyster Mushroom Mycelia into Alternative Packing." Dr. McLean supervised the project.

Beta Beta Beta has more than 600 chapters nationwide, most at four-year colleges and universities. It publishes a quarterly journal, BIOS, and offers grants and research awards to its members. At the time RCC inaugurated its chapter in 2013, it was one of only three community colleges in the nation involved in the society.
