Don Cairns, Executive Director of the Rockland Community College Foundation, was honored at the United Nations Headquarters in NYC on April 26, at the opening ceremony and reception for the exhibit, “You Are Not Alone: Celebrating the Healing Power of Empathy and Compassion in the Face of the Tragedy,” for his work as founder and director of the Ramapo Children of Chernobyl humanitarian assistance group.

Academics

Judith Ann Mayer, adjunct faculty, Nursing, earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she also previously obtained her BSN and MSN. Her area of personal and professional interest is maternal/child health.

Performance

Angelo Parra, adjunct English/Performing Arts announces "The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith" will open the season, (Aug. 24 through Sept. 24) at the Mosaic Theater Company in Washington DC.

Lynn Aaron, Professor, Computer Studies; Sara Annunziato, Instructor, Nursing; Kathleen Babcock, Instructor/Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, Occupational Therapy; Katherine Copp Brown, Instructor, Green Building Technology; and Patricia Szobonya, Assistant Professor, Paralegal Studies/Criminal Justice, presented "What's Their Style: Providing Learner-Centered Instruction with SUNY's Tools of Engagement Project (TOEP)" at the Tri-State Best Practices Conference: Issues of Equity in Higher Education on March 4 at Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst, NJ.

Peter Arvanites, Professor of Mathematics, gave a presentation titled, "Teaching a Course in Quantitative Literacy," at the 42nd Annual Ten County Mathematics Educators Association Conference held at Felix Festa Middle School in West Nyack, New York on March 11.

Robert Gulack, adjunct faculty, English, has again been selected to participate in New York University's Faculty Resource Network summer program, joining the seminar on "Teaching Shakespeare."

Dr. Cliff L. Wood, President, delivered a presentation, “RCC: An Economic Development Engine,” at the Rockland Business Association’s general membership luncheon April 20 at the Paramount Country Club in New City.

Students & Alumni

Sara Ward and Vanessa Reyes had their artwork selected for the BEST of SUNY Show in Albany, where they will compete for scholarships and honorariums among all two and four-year SUNY schools.

Outstanding Chemistry students Marie Bigot and Chad Wollman earned invitations to attend the Williams H. Nichols Symposium and Medal Award Dinner, sponsored by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society, on March 24. Adessa Butler, PhD., Assistant Professor, Chemistry, and Dr. Louis Rosenfeld, adjunct faculty, Science, also attended as faculty advisors.

Tri-Beta (Beta Beta Beta) Biological Honor Society members: Elizabeth Kalappura, Liji Joseph, Peyton Reiss, Melissa Reveil, Keverene Mason, Marjorie Calle-Rodriguez, Jorge Acuña, Kurtis Brown, presented their poster at the honor society’s Northeast District 1 Convention, April 22, at Manhattan College. Their research project, supervised by faculty advisor Dr. Jeffrey McLean, is titled, "Molding Oyster Mushroom Mycelia into Alternative Packing." Dr. Thomas Butler is also an advisor to the Tri-Beta group.

Alumna Kristian Comer ’06, was presented a Certificate of Merit for her multiple film and creative projects at a ceremony held on March 28 at the Clarkstown Town Hall. Comer was also recently honored by the Irish Echo newspaper in February in their 40 under 40 awards. Comer, who earned an AA Performing Arts and an AS Liberal Arts Humanities and Social Sciences at RCC, has many projects in pre and post production stages but recently completed filming two short projects: Riding with Sunshine and Next.
