Political Involvement of the RCC President

Approved by the Board of Trustees of Rockland Community College on June 29, 2017.

On June 29, 2017, the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees passed the following resolution:

WHEREAS,   Rockland Community College is the only institution of public higher education in Rockland County, NY; and

WHEREAS,   It is important that the President of Rockland Community College remain politically impartial, as it is his or her duty to promote the College to all audiences including those of varying political beliefs; and

WHEREAS,   The State University of New York prohibits State employees from using their position to gain political favor, encourage or discourage political contributions or activity or interfere with an election or lawful political activity; or use State resources for partisan political purposes; and

WHEREAS,   The same SUNY policy specifically provides State employees the right to make political contributions, and to be active in political campaigns during nonworking hours; and

WHEREAS,   The Rockland Community College Board of Trustees believes that making personal political contributions and actively campaigning, even during nonwork hours can pose potential conflicts of interest for the President of Rockland Community College; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees hereby prohibits the President of Rockland Community College from making political contributions or endorsements, or actively campaigning for any public official or candidate during the time in which the President of Rockland Community College is in office.
