Required Materials

Textbooks:

Weaving It Together, Book 4, by Milanda Broukal

Understanding and Using English Grammar, third edition by Betty Schrampfer Azar 

Supplies: a spiral notebook (pages are removed with a clean edge) or loose leaf notebook, a pen/pencil, a folder with a pocket on each side(completed work on the right side and work-in-progress on the left), a dictionary (used for essays in class or essay tests)

 

Learning Objectives

The objective of this course is to improve the language skills of non-native speakers.  This course is aimed mainly at improving reading, writing, listening and grammar development. There will be instruction in the following:

  • Grammar – word forms and functions, tenses, sentence structure, word order, etc.
  • Vocabulary and spelling
  • United States culture as needed
  • Reading comprehension
  • Essay writing
  • Editing Skills
  • Listening/Speaking skills (limited)

 

Grading

A = superior

A- = excellent

B+ = very good

B = above average

C+ = slightly above average

C = average but on the edge

C- = slightly below average

D = below average

 

Course Policies:

Good attendance and punctuality - *no more than five (5) absences, two late arrivals equal one absence

Homework

Class participation

Quizzes, midterm and final examinations

Portfolio of completed essays and reading comprehension tests  

Final grades will be based on all of the above as follows:

  • P = satisfactory work and passed to a higher level depending on scores
  • MP =measurable progress, but student needs to repeat the level
  • F = student has tried the same level two times and has not made progress – student may be asked to leave the program for one year to get tutoring or enhanced skills in another type of program
