Themes in British Literature I

Course Description

This course involves an examination of major themes in the great works of major writers in England from the Anglo Saxons to the Eighteenth Century.  Themes such as love, order, religion, freedom, nature, and leadership will be explored in writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Marvell, Donne,Milton, Pope, Swift  and others.

Course Requirements:

All students will be required to do the following:

  1. Write one research paper of no less than 12 typed pages 40%
  2. Lead one seminar discussion on an assigned topic 15%
  3. Complete one midterm and one final examination 25%
  4. Participate constructively in class discussion 20%

Co-requisite: None

 

Required Materials

The Norton Anthology of British Literature Vol I

In addition to scheduled primary source reading, the student will often be required to read selections from secondary source materials such as letters, criticism, biography and the like. These materials will be on closed reserve in the library and will be part of the discussion on the dates assigned for reading.

 

Course Policies:

1.Attendance is VITAL unless special circumstances prevail.  Excessive absence will result in lowering of grade or failure.

2. Due dates are firm unless special circumstances prevail.  Lateness will result in lowering of grade one full grade per day late.

3.  Grading standards are those delineated on the English Dept. "Green Sheet"
